How to remove location data from photos before you list your property

Most phones can save the place a photo was taken inside the file itself. For a holiday let, a rental or a home you live in, that is information you may not want to hand over with every photo you send to a co-host, a cleaner, a letting agent or a listing site. It takes a minute to turn off, and you can also strip it from photos you have already taken.

What location data is

When location is on for your camera, the phone writes the GPS position into the photo's metadata. You do not see it in the picture, but apps and some websites can read it. Listing sites handle uploaded files in their own way, so rather than relying on that, it is simpler to send files that do not carry location in the first place.

iPhone: stop the Camera saving location

1. Open Settings and go to Privacy & Security > Location Services > Camera.

2. Tap Never.

New photos will no longer include location. Photos you already took keep theirs, so use the steps below for those.

iPhone: share photos without location

1. In Photos, select the photos you want to send.

2. Tap the Share button, then tap Options at the top.

3. Turn off Location. You will see "Location Not Included" above Options.

4. Share as usual (AirDrop, Messages, Mail and so on).

iPhone: remove location from a photo you keep

1. Open the photo in Photos and tap the More button.

2. Tap Adjust Info, then Adjust Location.

3. Tap No Location.

Android: stop the camera saving location

The setting lives in the camera app, and its name depends on the phone. On a Google Pixel: open the Camera app, tap Settings at the bottom left, then More settings, and turn off Save location. On other phones look for a similar option in the camera settings, for example "Location tags" on Samsung or "Store location data" on OnePlus. Photos already taken keep their location, so for those use a tool that saves a fresh copy (next section).

The quick way for a whole set of listing photos

Our free Listing Photo Resizer runs in your browser and saves a new JPEG for each photo, sized for the platform you pick. The new file does not carry the original's location data. It also converts iPhone HEIC photos to JPG, so you can do both jobs in one step before you upload.

Before you upload

Then make the photos look their best: ProLister brightens and straightens phone photos without adding or changing anything in the room.

  • Check the photos themselves too: house numbers, street signs, car number plates, post on the table and anything visible through a window can give away more than metadata.
  • Keep the originals on your phone if you want the location for your own records.

Frequently asked questions

Does turning off camera location affect photos I already took?

No. It only applies to new photos. Remove location from existing photos with the iPhone Adjust Location option, the share Options toggle, or by saving new copies with the Photo Resizer.

Do Airbnb, Rightmove or Zoopla remove location data when I upload?

We have not found a public statement from these platforms on this, so we do not assume either way. Sending files without location is the safe option.

Is it only GPS that is stored?

Photos can also store details like the date and the phone model. Location is the one most people want to remove before sharing photos of where they live or host guests.

Will removing location lower photo quality?

No. On iPhone the share option and Adjust Location only change the metadata. The Photo Resizer saves a high-quality JPEG sized for your chosen platform.
